Mr. James Kelly is our of our mentors. He is an AP Physics and AP Chemistry teacher at Brunswick High School. Mr. Kelly enjoys writing curriculum, solving physics and chemistry problems, and playing guitar. Mr. Kelly was asked by a few Brunswick High School students, who had taken his Algebra-Based Physics class, if he would consider sponsoring a robotics club. He agreed to do so as he believes that “students who are interested in Math and Physics really should be provided some kind of club or activity that supports their interests”. Mr. Kelly hopes that the BHS’ FIRST Robotics team will encourage students who like Math and Physics to pursue taking higher-level physics and math courses and to acquire an interest in Engineering. Mr. Kelly hopes that the Robotics club members will gain hands-on engineering experience as they will be challenged to design, construct, and troubleshoot a robot and, ultimately, that robotics will encourage more students at BHS to acquire an interest in Physics, Calculus, Computer Programming, and Engineering. Mr. Kelly is passionate about encouraging FIRST and other engineering opportunities because he feels “ that the socio-economic stresses caused by a growing worldwide population along with a shrinking supply of resources demands humankind come up with innovative ideas for conserving and producing energy. We also must develop better methods for procuring freshwater required for agricultural needs, for cleaning, and for consumption by livestock and humans. The very survival of the earth and its occupants is contingent on the advancements of scientists and engineers. One major problem, currently, is that we need more engineers. Especially in the United States, there’s a shortage of engineers. We must get more students to pursue engineering”.
